My experience with hormonal birth control

I have only been on the pill for one full year. Throughout the year I was constantly visiting my doctor with health problems. So much in fact that I managed to become eligible for a loyalty card after having ordered over 20 prescriptions! For someone who hates having to take medication, this seemed crazy. I feel like my body has a hormonal mind of its own.

I found it very hard to lose weight this year, even though I was waitressing full time without proper meals most nights. I was consistently a few kilos heavier, with a lot of bloating in my belly. I have also been getting a lot of headaches this year, and after my third visit to the doctor about these headaches, she changed what pill I was on immediately and recommended an IUD instead. The headaches were because of the birth control I was taking. Which I thought was quite scary that it was perfectly normal to get headaches from birth control.

Other issues I have had during the year include breast tenderness and swelling, many bladder infections and recently I have started to get heartburn, something that I have never had before.

Writing all this down makes me realise how crazy it is that doctors are still prescribing the pill so easily without delving into other methods of birth control that would do the body much less harm. Why is it that women (myself included) feel like the only option for birth control is the pill? There are so many other methods out there it’s crazy!

What is your chosen method of contraception and how is it working for you?
